Woodland Enhancement

Funded by Sussex Lund

We have 10 acres of ancient woodland which guests, friends and children can enjoy. The project has enabled people to move more freely through the woodland and to see more wildlife

The Challenge

The woodland is basically coppice woodland, which has had little work done  in it over the last 30 years.
It has a wide range of trees including some magnificent oaks, some ash, aspen and of course chestnut and hornbeam.

The team worked with volunteers staying on the farm

We have just completed the final stage of the biodiversity work of the woodland thanks to a grant from Sussex Lund.

Already the woods are brighter and there are far more birds taking immediate advantage of the new light provided throughout the woodland.

It was hard work but very satisfying and rewarding to see the changes and the management of the woodland. We learnt a lot and now need to keep working in the woodland to maintain the changes made
What you see in the pictures is the stages of the work. Now all the rides are clear with the logs stacked and the brush put along the rides to provide habitat for animals, bird and insects,

Woodland Use

The felled wood will be used on the farm for fencing and other structures, including a proposed tree house. It will also be used as fuel in the farm houses.
